In addition to bumpers and tailgates, other plastic exterior parts, which are light and flexible, are expected to be used in a wider application range in the future. We will take the lead and propose various applications.
Roof
Development of the lightest roof module
Detachable roofs of convertible sports cars must be portable by human power and easy to detach. Addressing this challenge, we adopted a Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) and fulfilled the functional and performance requirements with its lightness, high strength, and high rigidity. Thermosetting SMC has excellent thermal properties, does not shrink during molding, and has a coefficient of linear expansion comparable to that of steel sheets. Due to its excellent dimensional stability, SMC was also adopted for folding roofs, which required strict accuracy for fitting on vehicle. In recent years, the development of CF-SMC materials, which use Carbon Fiber (CF) as a reinforcing material, has also progressed. Even more lightweight materials will contribute to environmental conservation.
Fender Flares
Improved appearance quality plus reduced cost thanks to integrated manufacturing
We perform integrated manufacturing from molding to painting at our plants and can meet the need for high-gloss painting quality, fulfilling our customers’ needs for appearance quality and cost reduction.
Luggage Panel
Well designed incorporation of aerodynamic devices for improved fuel economy and driving stability
While the use of aluminum or other metals was the standard option for convertible-car luggage panels due to their repeated complicated actions, we adopted a lightweight and highly rigid thermosetting plastic as an alternative to metal and have made the luggage panel considerably more lightweight. Weight reduction is just one benefit. It is possible to create a complex and sharp form taking advantage of the high degree of freedom in shape that plastics have. The result is high aerodynamic performance and design appeal. For example, to reduce the force that lifts the car due to the air flow, the duck tail shape can reduce the lift on the rear end, contributing to steering stability at high speeds.
Moreover, we pursue high quality in every detail of the design, such as minimizing the gaps between the luggage panel and the tail lights and body panels.
Fuel Filler/Charging Port Lid
High-value-added fuel filler and charging port lid with users’ convenience in mind
In addition to weight reduction due to switching from metal to plastics, we have made the fuel filler and charging port lid resistant to rust and improved their appearance quality. Taking advantage of the high degree of freedom in shape, which is the superiority of plastics, we respond to customer needs by integrating a structure used to hang the cap when refueling, an assist for opening and closing the cap, and other additional functions. As vehicle electrification accelerates and usage changes from refueling to charging on the user side, we are working on development pursuing value-added features combined with convenience and functions suitable for different usages, as well as thorough weight and cost reduction.
